A Night in the Lonesome October.

Almost forgot that it’s that season again. Beginning my yearly re-read of A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny, one chapter per night. Roger’s my favorite author of all time, mostly for his absolutely sublime Chronicles of Amber, but this book comes a close second.

If you’ve never read it, it’s the diary of Jack the Ripper’s dog as he and his master compete in an arcane contest with other horror archetypes to either bring about or prevent the enslavement of the world by the Elder Gods.

If you’ve never become acquainted with Roger, that’s gonna sound really weird. If you know the master and his works, it’s just another Thursday.

(I re-read Amber about once a year as well, and I always find something new to think about in it. I highly recommend trying him out if you’re a SF or fantasy nerd; his death and the subsequent mishandling of his estate caused him to fall out of the spotlight somewhat, but his kids have done a great job bringing his stories back to us. And if you’re not familiar with his body of work, I can guaran-damn-tee the authors you love know the man.)
